Redesigning an Alumni Magazine

A school may publish an alumni magazine for their alumni. Often, these magazines are designed to keep alumni up to date with their school's activities, while raising money for the school.

University of South Carolina

The University of South Carolina is a comprehensive university located in Columbia, South Carolina. It is the state's oldest and largest public institution of higher education. As of fall 2019, the university has more than 35,000 students studying on the Columbia research campus.

The university is home to numerous academic specializations, including business, computing, and the health sciences. In addition, it offers a wide variety of varsity sports teams, as well as intramural sports.

The University of South Carolina is a member of the Southeastern Conference. Students also have access to the Carolina Shuttle, which operates seven routes on weekends, holidays, and during semesters. This transportation service is free for university students.

Cornellians

In the quest to keep Cornell alumni current and engaged, the good folks at the Cornell Alumni Office have come up with a new digital first publication, Cornellians. To be exact, this is a multimedia rich, reader centric, and information rich digital experience that will engage the entire Cornell alumni community. It will be a one stop shop for all your Cornell news, information, and events.

The new digital magazine will include features such as the latest in multimedia content, interactive features, and social networking opportunities. Not to mention a print counterpart. This new publication will make Cornell University even more accessible to the alumni community, especially those living abroad. A subscription based option will also be available.

Baruch College

The Baruch College Alumni Magazine is a valuable resource for current students and alumni. The magazine features articles about faculty scholarship, alumni news, and the latest campus events. It is distributed to more than 118,000 current and former students, as well as corporations, prospective students, and friends of the College.

In addition to providing readers with the latest campus news, the magazine aims to connect alumni to the College and each other. It is published twice yearly. During the spring and summer, the magazine is also published online. Moreover, it is a key communication tool that works closely with the College's administration, athletics department, and other centers.

Skelton Design

Skelton Design is a design firm that specializes in magazine redesign. The firm has more than 30 years of combined experience in the consumer magazine industry.

One of their latest projects was redesigning Brown Alumni Magazine. The redesign incorporates details that are true to the Brown experience. It also balances longer reads with short pieces that are easy to skim. This is a good example of how a website can translate the look and feel of a printed publication to a digital presence.

In the spirit of innovation, the redesign features a data-points section. There's also a "What Do You Think?" section where readers can submit their own polls.

Point Five Design

Point Five Design has helped alumni magazines and other types of media tell their story. The agency has collaborated with many schools, including the aforementioned Princeton University and Brooklyn Law School. Recent projects include the redesigned University of South Carolina alumni magazine. Their award-winning team includes Alissa Levin and Benjamin Levine.

The company specializes in re-imagining print and digital consumer media, especially magazines. Its creative team has more than 30 years of experience in the publishing industry, and a long list of clients spanning the arts and sciences to the corporate sector. They have also made a name for themselves in the interactive realm, particularly with their website, which uses a modular design to create a logically ordered hierarchy of content.

Zehno

A redesign of Washington and Lee University's alumni magazine by Zehno helped the magazine find a new voice. It needed to balance deep history with the university's brand. The team also redesigned the magazine's website to accommodate digital content.

W&L's alumni magazine features a wide array of subjects. From faculty books to "Dubyuhnell Day" to current students making a difference, it provides readers with an insider's view of life at the college. While the magazine is popular among alumni, it was not reflecting the school's current reputation.

Zehno worked with the university to create an alumni magazine that could be both attractive and newsstand-worthy. The design includes an editorial pattern, storytelling devices, and signature editorial treatments.
